Stephen King has officially announced Other Worlds Than These, the third and final installment in The Talisman trilogy, arriving October 2025. For fans who’ve waited over two decades since Black House, this news answers the cliffhanger that left Jack Sawyer’s fate uncertain.
The Return of Jack Sawyer After Peter Straub’s Death
When Peter Straub passed away in 2022, many believed The Talisman trilogy would remain incomplete. King had other plans. He discovered an old email from Straub containing an intriguing story concept involving Charles Starkweather, the 1950s spree killer who terrorized the Midwest when both authors were children.
Just over a year ago, King began writing what he called “T3.” Working alone but channeling his late collaborator’s spirit, King received blessings from Straub’s widow Susan and his children Emma and Ben before moving forward.
How Other Worlds Than These Connects to The Dark Tower
The title comes directly from The Gunslinger, the first Dark Tower novel. When Jake Chambers faces death, he tells Roland: “Go then. There are other worlds than these.” This isn’t coincidental. King confirms that the Territories from The Talisman and Mid-World from The Dark Tower were always the same place under different names.
King states plainly: “I wanted to go back to Mid-World, which was always the Territories by another name.”
What Is Other Worlds Than These About?
King provides this synopsis: Jack Sawyer must stop both a gang of infected teenagers from America and the mysterious forces of the Gullet at Mid-World’s edge before all worlds are destroyed. Jack is older now, his ka-tet is falling apart, and success seems nearly impossible.
Black House ended with Jack healed in the Territories but unable to remain in America for long without becoming fatally ill. This book resolves that story.
Gabriel Rodriguez Returns for Illustrations
Artist Gabriel Rodriguez, who illustrated King’s Fairy Tale and collaborated with Joe Hill on Locke & Key, will provide artwork for the new novel. His visual style has proven compatible with King’s mythic storytelling.
Do You Need to Read The Talisman First?
King says no. While reading The Talisman (1984) and Black House (2001) will deepen your experience, Other Worlds Than These works as a standalone adventure. That said, longtime readers will catch references spanning four decades of King’s interconnected universe.
Narrated Excerpt Available Now
I’ve narrated the official excerpt from Esquire, which you can watch below. Hearing these opening pages confirms that King is tapping into something fundamental here, a blend of the mythic and the personal that defined his collaboration with Straub.
When Can You Preorder Other Worlds Than These?
The book releases in October 2025 and is available for preorder now through major retailers. For King fans, especially those who’ve followed the Dark Tower saga and the Talisman novels, this represents a major convergence of storylines.
After 23 years, Jack Sawyer’s journey finally continues. Long days and pleasant nights, Constant Readers.
